2 Day Introduction to Long Range Shooting

2 Day Introduction to Long Range Shooting Course


(18 Training hours)


 


 This course is broken down into two phases:

Phase One: (Internal Ballistics & Marksmanship Fundamentals)

  • Explanation of every Component of a Long Range Rifle system
  • Rifle Setup & Scope Mounting
  • Barrel Whip & Accuracy Nodes
  • Recoil Cycle & Management
  • Marksmanship Fundamentals
  • Cleaning & Maintenance
  • Cold Bore vs Hot Bore Zero
  • Cold Bore vs Dirty Bore
  • Barrel Twist Rates
  • Optics for Long range hunting (FFP vs SFP)
  • MILS vs MOA
  • Scope Tracking Test

This phase will have approximately 3 hours classroom time and 5 hours range time. The day will conclude with a scope tracking test and final zero confirmation. 8:00AM - 5:00PM ( 1 hour lunch break).


 

Phase Two: (External Ballistics & Solver Truing)

  • Atmospheric effects (Air Pressure, Temperature, Humidity) Density Altitude
  • Aerodynamic Jump & Spin Drift
  • Earth based effects (Coriolis, Eotvos)
  • G1 vs G7 Ballistic Coefficient’s, Custom Drag Models CDM's (How to maximize BC's)
  • Wind Reading utilizing Vegetation, Mirage, & Feel. Learning to "pattern" wind.
  • Truing your Ballistics Solver (MV True and DSF True)
  • Supersonic, Transonic, & Subsonic flight
  • Advanced Laser Range finding
  • Judging Distance by Eye
  • Milling Targets
  • Familiarization with a variety of Ballistics Solvers
  • Engaging targets to just over 1000 yards!
  • Ammunition Selection for Long Range Shooting

This day will be Long... but rewarding. At this point all of your hard work will have paid off and you will end the day with an entire new outlook on shooting and the distance at which you feel comfortable engaging targets! This day will be approximately 4 hours classroom and 6 hours range time. 7:00AM - 6:00PM. (1 hour Lunch Break)


 

NOTES: Lodging and Meals are not provided. Staff can point you to the best place to stay upon request.


 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Rifle Capable of 1MOA @ 100yards (1.047" 3 Shot Group) * We encourage you to gain your new skill set and confidence with your personal equipment, however we offer loaner rifles upon request.
  • Bipods capable of being used in the prone shooting position
  • 80 Rounds of Premium Ammunition * Minimum (Call for Suggestions)
  • Optics with external windage & elevation knobs, graduated in MIL or MOA * We sell optics you may purchase during the course
  • Note pad to record data
  • Appropriate clothing for the season
  • Classroom materials Pen/ Pencils, Notebook, Highlighters etc...

Recommended items:

  • Kestrel or similar wind reading device
  • Personal Binoculars/Spotting Scope
  • Chest pack/ Bino harness
  • Wind Powder
  • Laser Range Finder Capable of 1200 yards
  • Shooting Bags or 1 Pair of Old Socks
  • Positive attitude & Open mind!

  • Projectile selection for Long Range Hunting
  • Optics for Long range hunting (FFP vs SFP)
  • MILS vs MOA
  • Field Judging Game utilizing a Graduated Reticle
  • Scope Tracking Test

  • Familiarization with a wide variety of Ballistics Solvers
  • High Angle Familiarization
  • Engaging targets to just over 1000 yards!
  • Positional Shooting with common Hunting Gear
  • Ammunition, Projectile, & Powder Selection for Long Range Hunting
  • Anatomy and Physiology of Game Animals
  • Terminal Ballistics

This day will be approximately 4 hours classroom and 6 hours range time. 7:00AM - 5:00PM. (30 min Lunch Break) Bring Food!


 

Phase: Three (Review & Cumulative Training Exercise)

  • Review of course materials (Q&A)
  • Off Site Location Engagement in replicated Long Range Hunting Scenario

You are now a Long Range Hunter whether chasing that herd of Pronghorn on the Prairie, that monster Bull Elk you spotted a mile up the canyon, or glassing a cutover for a Whitetail Buck in the southeast. You have the skills and knowledge necessary to make that 900yard shot when it is all on the line. And you will prove it to yourself in our Cumulative Training Exercise. 8:00AM- 6:00PM.

1 Day Wind Reading Course

1 Day Wind Reading Course


(8 training hours)




 


 This course will start off with an early morning No Wind Zero on your rifle, then we will transition into the classroom for a 2-hour block of instruction.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN…

  • Aerodynamic Jump (although this is an external ballistics effect, it is wind driven and will be covered in this course)
  • The Beaufort Scale (Vegetation Scale)
  • How to use mirage to determine wind speed
  • How to use mirage to determine wind direction
  • How to “feel” wind speed
  • How to pattern wind cycles
  • How to Bracket wind
  • Utilizing ballistics solvers to give wind solutions
  • How to obtain a custom “wind number” for rapid firing solutions with your rifle system
  • Wind speed training drills
  • At what part of bullet flight wind matters most
  • How wind flows
  • And more!

You will also receive a custom wind reading cheat card.

  • Shooting bags or similar shooting support system (Bring what you normally use in your respective shooting discipline)
  • 50 Rounds of Premium Ammunition (Call for Suggestions)
  • Optics with external Windage & Elevation knobs, graduated in MIL or MOA * We sell optics you may purchase during the course
  • Note pad to record data
  • Appropriate clothing for the season
  • Classroom materials Pen/ Pencils, Notebook, Highlighters etc...
